Microdermabrasion
Have you ever seen a brick house being sandblasted? Abrasive granules of sand are forcibly blasted against the brick to remove the surface layer of paint, exposing the underlying beauty of the brick.
Microdermabrasion is a similar process, though the granules are fine crystals and the force used is markedly less. Removing the superficial layer of dead skin cells helps correct superficial imperfections and exposes softer fresher skin. Some patients will do a microdermabrasion once in a while when they feel their facial skin is looking dull and old, while other patients will do one regularly as part of their skin care regimen. Often the first step for patients starting a new skin care regimen is to do a microdermabrasion. Fine lines, wrinkles, tone and texture issues can all be improved from this procedure. Areas that can be treated with microdermabrasion include the face, neck and decollete.
A micordermabrasion treatment is quick, easily tolerated and has little to no downtime. Our machine uses aluminum oxide crystals to help reveal healthy younger looking skin. I have my patients wash their face before starting to remove any excess oil or makeup. Once in a supine position, I place drapes around their neck and cotton in their ears to help catch any extraneous crystals. I perform three passes with the aluminum oxide crystals. Each pass is composed of the crystals being forced onto the skin followed by them being vacuumed off the skin. After three passes, your skin may have the sensation of a wind burn, but this sensation will diminish quickly. To finish, I apply SkinMedica® TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream that acts as a barrier to protect and restore moisture to the sensitive skin followed by a sunscreen.
After a microdermabrasion treatment, your skin care products will penetrate better and be more effective. However, you will need to take extra precaution in the sun for a week or longer as your newly exposed skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure and at greater risk for sun damage.
After care instructions are simple – moisturizer and sun protection. I recommend liberal use of the SkinMedica® TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream or other heavy moisturizer for the next week. We also recommend liberal use of NEOVA® DNA Damage Control Silc Sheer 2.0, which is a broad spectrum SPF 40 sunscreen.
