KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment for improving the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat (double chin). It is a prescription medication that is injected into the submental fat and causes the fat cells to be destroyed and release the stored fat. Since the cells are destroyed, fat can no longer collect under your chin. Your body clears the released fat from this area naturally. As your double chin recedes, a more youthful appearance returns.
There are several factors that contribute to a double chin. Family genetics, weight gain and aging are the most recognized factors. We can’t control our genetics. We can exercise and try to control our weight but once a double chin has formed, it may seem resistant to diet and exercise. Aging is probably the meanest factor causing a double chin. We all age. As we do, our faces start to reform and fall, causing a broadening of the lower face. We see the onset of skin laxity in the neck, jowls and double chins.
Until recently, the method of treating this area was surgical. Neck lifts and liposuction were the standard. Still for some, that is the only way to improve the appearance of this area. When the skin is too lax around the neck or another surgical procedure is planned on the face or neck, it makes practical sense to pursue surgery. However, if you aren’t a candidate for surgery for medical or financial reasons and you have mild, moderate to severe submental fat, an office based injection treatment with KYBELLA® may be an alternative to help you enhance and redefine your look.
KYBELLA® is injected into a defined space under the chin in an office based setting. A treatment would include time for assessing the area, forming a treatment plan, numbing the area before injecting, explaining after care instructions and scheduling a follow up exam. The injection process is quick and uncomplicated, but a patient will experience a burning sensation that may last a few minutes. This sensation can be mitigated with the use of pre-treatment or post-treatment OTC analgesics and/or an ice pack.
After a treatment, the injected area will be red and swollen for a few days up to a week. The injected area will start to feel numb and firm to touch. These symptoms can last for six to eight weeks while your body is removing the released fat. One would want to plan a treatment at a time when there is no interference with social or work commitments. Though a scarf or turtleneck could hide any redness or swelling, planning a trip to the beach or a major life event would not be advised. Once the area feels normal again, the treatment has run its course.
The number of treatments needed to achieve a desired result is variable. Since the submental fat cells are destroyed and cannot restore fat, a comprehensive treatment plan with KYBELLA® could be spread out over many months to better accommodate financial, social or work commitments. In the FDA study some patients were satisfied with one or two treatments, but a majority of patients needed from four to six treatments for the best results. I imagine that the number of treatments needed for any individual patient would be a function of how they respond to a treatment and how much correction is desired.
