When you look in the mirror, are you seeing your mother’s or father’s double chin? Are you feeling that you look heavier or older than you are because of it? Have you tried dieting and exercising and had no luck in reshaping the area? Are you someone who feels that surgery is not an alternative for you to correct the condition? If this sounds like you, there’s a new product that may help get rid of that double chin. It’s called KYBELLA®.

Kybella Phoenix Double Chin Treatments with Willo MediSpaKYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment for improving the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat (double chin). It is a prescription medication that is injected into the submental fat and causes the fat cells to be destroyed and release the stored fat. Since the cells are destroyed, fat can no longer collect under your chin. Your body clears the released fat from this area naturally. As your double chin recedes, you and others see a more youthful appearance you once had.

There are several factors that contribute to a double chin. Family genetics, weight gain and aging are the most recognized factors. We can’t control our genetics. We can control our weight, and for many that is a constant struggle. Once a double chin has formed, it may seem resistant to diet and exercise. Aging is probably the meanest factor causing a double chin. We all age. As we do, our face starts to reform and fall, causing a broadening of the lower face. We see the onset of skin laxity in the neck, jowls and double chins.

Until recently, the method of enhancing this area was surgical. Neck lifts and liposuction were the standard. Still for some, that is the only way to improve the appearance of this area. When the skin is too lax around the neck or another surgical procedure is planned on the face or chin, it makes practical sense to pursue surgery. However, if you aren’t a candidate for surgery for medical or financial reasons, and you have mild, moderate to severe submental fat, an office based injection treatment with KYBELLA® may be an alternative to help you enhance and redefine your look.

Before & After Pictures of Kybella PHX Double Chin Injections

KYBELLA® is injected into a defined space under the chin in an office based setting. A treatment would include time for assessing the area, forming a treatment plan, numbing the area before injecting, explaining after care instructions and scheduling a follow up exam.

The actual injection process takes only a few minutes, but during that time a patient will experience a burning sensation that may last 5-10 minutes. This sensation can be mitigated with the use of pre-treatment or post-treatment OTC analgesics and/or an ice pack.

After a treatment, there can be swelling and bruising and a sense of numbness in the injected area that can last for days to weeks. These symptoms are expected, are part of the remodeling and healing process and resolve spontaneously.

The number of treatments needed to achieve the results a patient wants is variable. In the FDA study, patients had better satisfaction with more treatments. Some were satisfied with one or two treatments, but a majority of patients needed from four to six treatments for best results. I imagine that the number of treatments needed for any individual patient would be a function of how much correction is needed and what the desired end result is.

Another factor to consider with a KYBELLA® treatment is the remodeling and healing time. One would want to plan a treatment at a time when there is no interference with social or work commitments. A scarf or turtleneck should hide any redness or swelling, and OTC analgesics should relieve any discomfort. However, planning a trip to the beach or a major life event would not be advised.

Since the fat cells are destroyed and cannot store fat, retreatment is not expected after a desired result is achieved. A comprehensive treatment plan with KYBELLA® could then be spread out over many months. A retreatment is not recommended sooner than six to eight weeks, but since there is no reaccumulation of fat, subsequent treatments could be spaced out even longer so as to better accommodate financial, social or work commitments.

Since KYBELLA® is from Allergan, it is included in the Brilliant Distinctions® rewards program. A treatment with KYBELLA® earns 400 points which translates to a $40 discount coupon that can be used on any Allergan product.
