JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC

Are you noticing your once beautiful luscious lips starting to look like your grandmother’s?  Are they thinning out?  Are you losing your upper lip completely? Are there vertical perioral lines (smokers lines) above and below your lips that your lipstick bleeds into?  These changes are most likely a natural progression of your inherited genetics causing volume loss in and around your lips but can be exacerbated by sun exposure and repetitive muscle movement.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC is part of the JUVÉDERM^® Collection of Fillers.  It was developed for correcting and softening the appearance of vertical perioral lip lines and for adding subtle volume to a thinning upper and lower lip.  JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC is created using Allergan Aesthetics™ Vycross^® technology and is non-hydrophylic with a low concentration of hyaluronic acid.  JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC feels a little thicker than water and is the least volumizing filler of the JUVÉDERM^® Collection of Fillers.  This low concentration hyaluronic acid filler is suited for correcting fine lines without overfilling delicate areas as could happen with a heavier filler.  JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC leaves a natural-looking, soft and smooth correction with results lasting up to a year.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC has lidocaine added to decrease any discomfort from the injection procedure, and it may be dissolved with an enzyme treatment if needed.  Differing from the other JUVÉDERM^® fillers which come in prefilled 1 ml syringes, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® XC comes in a 0.55 ml prefilled syringe.  For a patient who wants a minimal correction or a subtle increase in lip volume, this smaller syringe size works well.  However more often than not,  there is not enough of the filler to make the desired corrections, and another syringe may be needed.  This additional syringe would increase the cost of a procedure that might otherwise be accomplished at a lower cost with one syringe of a heavier filler. 

When a patient presents wanting lip augmentation, filler options are discussed.  Since there are several JUVÉDERM^® fillers that can be used for this procedure, a patient will want to select one with properties that will produce the desired correction.  The look of ones lips is very personal.  There is no right or wrong look.  Some want the upper lip fuller than the lower lip and others want the lower fuller than the upper.  It helps to bring a picture showing the desired look.  My goal is to create the lips a client wants.

After discussing with a patient how they want their lips treated, I provide a dental infiltrate with injected lidocaine to numb the lips and lessen any discomfort caused by the filler injections.  After the procedure, the lips may be bruised, swollen and tender for a few days.
