The FDA approved JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC for the treatment and correction of age related mid-face volume loss in men and women.  JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC is made with short and intermediate hyaluronic acid strands of low and high molecular weight using the newer Vycross^® technology.  Combined with more effective cross-linking, less water that can be drawn in and is not considered to be hydrophylic. 

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC comes in premixed 1 ml syringes with powdered lidocaine added for patient comfort and can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed.  It has a high concentration of hyaluronic acid giving the filler a thicker consistency that I compare similar to gelatin.  Because of this thicker viscosity, unlike other fillers it is injected deep onto bone.  From the bone’s surface it has the ability to lift not only skin but also muscle and fat thus producing an amplified smooth malleable correction. 

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC is used to lift and contour cheeks, literally sculpting them. Restoring the lost volume in your cheeks brings back a more youthful facial appearance.  During a treatment, the hollows and shadows that made you look older disappear, and more light reflects around your eyes accenting them.  You see a younger refreshed you with an improvement that can last up to two years.

My experience with JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC has been that patients like the correction they see, but there may be some confusion as to how many syringes of JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC are needed for cheek augmentation.  One syringe may be enough for a mild bilateral cheek correction. However, if deep hollows or marked flattening of the cheeks are present, additional syringes may be required.  I recommend patients new to JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC start with a minimal treatment of one syringe.  This gives some amount of correction and allows them to evaluate the filler.  After the filler has settled, patients might come back to further enhance the treatment area.  

Though the FDA approved JUVÉDERM VOLUMA^® XC for age-related mid-face volume loss correction, it may be used to fill sunken temples on the forehead or to augment a weak chin.  Remember all hyaluronic acid fillers gradually break down over time.  Therefore you will want to occasionally refresh your treatment.
